While reading Wireless Expense Management: Controlling the Invasion of Personal Cell Phones, a 2009 report by the Aberdeen Group, I stumbled upon two great but simple suggestions on how companies can better manage their cellular expenses.
1. Schedule Reviews to Update Usage Policies.
In October, we talked about setting up either Proactive or Reactive Cellular Strategies. A good supplement to those strategies is to hold regular meetings with your staff and evaluate what their demands are in terms of usage. This way, you will be able to create policies that help your staff communicate effectively, while also eliminating counterproductive restrictions.
Our take: review meetings with your staff are also a great opportunity to gauge your current rate plans. Based on the input you receive from your team, you can change your plans to accommodate only essential features and eliminate unnecessary expenses.
2. Create a Reference Website Containing Cellular Policies and Best Practices
Once you establish a cellular usage policy, consider implementing a staff website with all your policies and best practices. To help your staff reduce cellular costs voluntarily, you must give them tools that will help them monitor their own usage. Knowing what the rules are will help your staff make better-informed decisions.
Our take: we know that it can be burdensome to set up a new website, especially one that exists only to host your cellular policy. Simply posting your policy in an easily accessible location (within the company intranet perhaps) will help you achieve the same results.
Cellular expenses can quickly spiral out of control if left unregulated; having clear and tailored policies will help you and your team rein in those costs!
